Chamber hosts seminar on 'Innovation in the Healthcare Sector'

The Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce’s Healthcare Division will host an informative Zoom webinar highlighting “Innovation in the Healthcare Sector” on Wednesday, December 2, 2020, from 12:00 – 1:00 PM.

Division Chair, Mike Dotson with AccessHealth will moderate a panel discussion with Dr. Lance Black, Dr. Swarna Balasubramaniam, and Dr. Ashvin Dewan. Our panelists are on the forefront of innovation and will discuss upcoming projects in the healthcare sector as well as accelerating the adoption of new technologies, the unique contribution physicians can have in healthcare innovation, how physicians can get involved in innovation while still in practice and how Texas is attracting talented entrepreneurs from all over the world.

Lance Black, MD, MBID is the Associate Director of the Texas Medical Center’s TMCx and Biodesign programs.

Dr. Black served previously as the Medical Device Innovation Lead and draws on his extensive military, medical, and engineering expertise to support the resident companies of TMCx in developing innovative healthcare technologies. After earning his B.S. in Biological Engineering from Louisiana State University and his M.D. from LSU Health Sciences Center of New Orleans, Dr. Black served in the U.S. Air Force and deployed overseas twice: first as Chief of Medical Staff for Manas Transit Base in Kyrgyzstan, and then as a Squadron Flight Surgeon in Okinawa, Japan. Inspired by his work with Wounded Warrior amputees, Dr. Black utilized his background in Biological Engineering to focus on the design and development of medical devices.

Following his exit from service, Dr. Black received his Masters of Biomedical Innovation & Development from Georgia Tech, including a year in their Masters of Industrial Design program.

Dr. Swarna Balasubramaniam is a surgeon, inventor, and now, a full-time medical device entrepreneur. She is the founder of Noleus Technologies, a Houston-based medical device company focused on developing and commercializing innovative technologies intended to accelerate recovery and to improve outcomes after surgery. She is a board-certified colorectal and general surgeon by training and has 20 years of experience as a practicing surgeon and surgical practice owner in Sugar Land, TX. She completed medical school and general surgery training at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. She worked as a general surgeon at Kaiser Permanente for two years prior to completing a colon & rectal surgery fellowship at The University of Southern California in Los Angeles. She has experience in basic science research in the areas of radiologic imaging, cardio-renal physiology, molecular oncology, and clinical translational surgical research.

Ashvin Dewan, MD is a practicing orthopedic surgeon at Houston Methodist Hospital Sugar Land and CoFounder of CaseCTRL- a software platform for coordinating surgery. In addition to managing sports-related injuries, Dr. Dewan is passionate about enhancing the delivery of surgical care. As Chief Medical Officer at CaseCTRL, he is the visionary behind their software as a service platform that leverages A.I., automation, and predictive analytics. Dr. Dewan earned his Bachelor of Science in bioengineering from Rice University in Houston, Texas, graduating summa cum laude; and then completed his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine. After completing world-class orthopedic surgical training at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, he served as a team doctor for the MLB Orioles, NFL Rams, and NHL Blues.
